From the screens in our pockets to the glasses on our faces, everything invites us into a different realm. Is this invitation an escape or an enrichment? The pandemic pushed this question onto all our doorsteps. Work meetings happened on screens; holiday greetings were exchanged via message boxes. While we were grateful for this technological blessing, we also felt an indescribable sense of loss. It’s at this very point that the scales we use to measure value begin to wobble.
On one side, a perfect, risk-free world woven from pixels; on the other, the dusty, noisy one full of unexpected surprises. Which will tip the scale? Can our brain even tell the virtual from the real? Does our soul feel nourished by this digital diet? Or are we all turning into the people in Plato’s cave, mistaking the shadows dancing on the wall for reality?

The Virtual Marketplace Inside the Brain
Our brain is the most complex organ in the world, and simultaneously, the most easily fooled. Close your eyes and imagine touching a lemon to your tongue. You’ll feel your mouth water. That’s a small proof of how our brain sometimes struggles to distinguish reality from imagination.
But what if you were convinced that you were standing on the peak of a mountain you’ve never visited, feeling the wind on your face? Research into Virtual Reality (VR) shows that a significant portion of participants report physical reactions like loss of balance, sweating, and increased heart rate. So, our body acts as if it’s real. Pilots spend hundreds of hours in flight simulators. The brain gets down to serious work even in a virtual cockpit.
Could this be creating a kind of “neuronal hypocrisy”? On one hand, our brain reacts to pixels; on the other, our soul whispers that something is missing. Our mirror neurons make us sympathize with a character crying on screen, yet we might hesitate to knock on the door of our neighbor sobbing in the next room.
The brain is an efficient machine; it wants to process the most stimuli with the least energy. The virtual world, in this sense, offers ready-made, packaged, risk-free stimuli.
