Introduction: The Body and Freedom Paradox
Is having a body really freedom, or is it freedom’s most fundamental constraint?
At first glance, this might seem absurd. Of course the body is freedom! We run, we touch, we taste. Without a body, we can’t drink a cup of coffee or feel the warmth of the sun. But pause for a moment: doesn’t the same body also imprison us? A body that can’t move, a body in pain, a body growing weaker with age… Are these freedom, or are they freedom’s constrained forms?
This paradox has occupied philosophers, scientists, and engineers for millennia. In ancient Greece, enslaved bodies were interpreted as the captivity of the free mind. Today, technology promises to transcend the same bodily limits. But this promise carries a deep paradox within it: when we talk about “transcending” the body, we need to ask—for whom, and at what cost?
Is technology liberating for disabled individuals, or does it reinforce normative body concepts as a mechanism of control? This question stands at the critical intersection of body philosophy, neuroscience, and disability studies. In this piece, we’ll examine the body-freedom relationship in depth from the perspective of technological transformation.
CHAPTER 1: Conceptual Ground — The Historical Journey of Body, Disability, and Technology
1.1. From the Medical Model to the Social Model: The Transformation of Disability
In disability studies, a critical distinction exists between two fundamental approaches: the medical model and the social model.
The medical model views disability as a “defect” in the individual’s body. According to this approach, the problem lies in the person’s biological structure and must be “corrected” through medical intervention. An amputated arm, in this model, is “lacking” something; a prosthetic arm is the tool that remedies this lack.
The social model conceptualizes disability in an entirely different way. Here, the problem lies not in the body but in social structures and environmental arrangements. The “disability” of a wheelchair user isn’t the stairs—it’s the social choices that built the stairs. The same person, in an accessible environment, might experience no “disability” at all.
Why is this distinction so crucial for understanding the technology-body relationship? Because the same prosthetic arm carries two different meanings in these two models. In the medical model, the prosthetic is a tool that “fixes the defect.” In the social model, it can be discussed as something that renders social inequality invisible and leaves the individual obligated to conform to a normative body. When the prosthetic “corrects” the body, doesn’t it actually reinforce “normal” bodies as the standard?

1.2. Donna Haraway and the Cyborg: Beyond the Boundaries of Body
When discussing technology and body, Donna Haraway’s groundbreaking “A Cyborg Manifesto” (1985) is indispensable. Haraway celebrates the blurring of boundaries between human and animal, human and machine, and the physical and non-physical. For her, the cyborg is not a dystopian nightmare but a liberating figure that refuses to fit into traditional categories of gender, race, and species.
